Chalk Paint® FAQ

What is Chalk Paint®?

Chalk Paint® is a line of beautiful, highly sought-after, decorative paint created by Annie Sloan.

What makes Chalk Paint® so special?

Annie Sloan's Chalk Paint® is special for many reasons!

One of our favorite Chalk Paint® facts is that no stripping, priming, or sanding is usually necessary before beginning your painting project. Chalk Paint® will easily adhere to poly and varnish, so no need to worry! Just a simple dusting or cleaning is normally the only prep you will need to do prior to painting. (
Occasionally, certain pieces might require a little sanding, especially if there are jagged edges, rust, or other surface debris.)

Chalk Paint® is not exclusively for wooden furniture. Try it out on metal, brick, leather, even fabric! For walls, on floors, furniture, home decor items -- this high-quality and versatile paint is the perfect match for nearly all surfaces!

Painting with Chalk Paint® is effortless, fun, and very rewarding. Do-It-Yourself Chalk Paint® projects are not only huge money-savers, but are also very enjoyable!

We always feel great after completing our Chalk Paint® projects because the finishes are durable and beautiful.

How many Chalk Paint® colors are available?

Chalk Paint® is currently featured in 32 gorgeous colors. Don’t see the exact color you’d like? Not a problem! Chalk Paint® can easily be blended to create any custom color. The color-blending possibilities are endless!

*Send us an email or stop by our store if you need color consulting. We have been trained in the Annie Sloan Method and are happy to help in your color-making decisions!

What is the best way to apply Chalk Paint®?

Chalk Paint® is typically applied liberally by brush. Visible brush strokes in the finish is a common Chalk Paint® look.
To get started, tip the can upside down and shake before use. Then open and stir well. If the paint is too thick just add a little water.

How much Chalk Paint® do I need for my next project?

As a rough guide, one quart of Chalk Paint® covers approximately 150 square feet, or the equivalent of a small dresser. Of course, this will vary depending on how many coats of paint you use to cover your piece.

Is Graphite Chalk Paint® a true black?

The Chalk Paint® palette doesn’t include a true black. Graphite is nearly black, but less simple and hard, and more mellow and sophisticated. You can create a darker appearance to Graphite by first applying a layer of Aubusson Blue. Follow with a coat of Graphite. When the paint is dry, apply Annie Sloan Dark Soft Wax.

*Tip: Mix a bit of Aubusson Blue into the wax to make it appear more black than brown.

What is the easiest way to distress my finish for a more aged look?

With Chalk Paint®, distressing is no longer an arduous chore. Most finishes are best when just a bit of paint is evenly rubbed away here and there using fine grit sandpaper. This will be easier to do if you apply Annie Sloan Soft Wax first. The Soft Wax will reduce any sanding dust, and help to keep your workspace clean.

Are Chalk Paint® and Soft Wax safe for use on baby cribs, etc.?

Absolutely! Both Chalk Paint®and Annie Sloan Soft Wax are safe to use on furniture meant for baby and child use. However, before putting the furniture to use, please allow the Soft Wax to cure for a minimum of 14 days. Samples of Chalk Paint® and Soft Wax have been independently tested and certified as "Toy Safe" according to strict European regulations (BS EN 71-3:2013).

Annie Sloan cares about your health. While there are no inherently harmful ingredients in Soft Wax, we do advise that expectant mothers have someone else paint their piece.
